3S technology in use in the food industry and for the odour assessment of recycled plastics
3S GmbH, in collaboration with Saarland University, has developed a remarkable technical innovation designed not only to reduce food waste but also already in use for the assessment of recycled plastics.
An exciting article by Tagesschau introduces this groundbreaking solution capable of checking the freshness of food. The testing system, based on the proven gas sensor technology also used in the OdorCheckerSpot (OCS) by plastship partner 3S GmbH, offers an outstanding method for odour assessment in the manufacturing industry. In the OCS testing device, it is particularly used with recycled plastics. This innovative "artificial nose," as presented in the research study, can detect early signs of mould growth and spoilage, potentially preventing millions of tonnes of food waste. Prototypes of this technology have already been successfully tested and could, for example, identify a single mouldy orange in a crate of fresh fruit. 3S GmbH is developing a system specifically designed to meet the needs of the food industry and retail.
But that’s not all: the technology's applications extend far beyond the food sector. 3S engineers have brought the OCS to market maturity in the field of plastics recycling, which could represent a true revolution. Its ability to assess odour quality could help address current recycling challenges and set future quality standards.
