In their joint research project "Rezy-Spezi," the Kunststoff-Zentrum SKZ and plastship GmbH not only identified barriers to the use of secondary materials in plastic processing. They also developed actionable recommendations for the industry to increase recycled plastics content in the future.
Research project by SKZ and plastship GmbH identifies potential for recycled plastics
31.05.2024 – Why isn't more recycled plastics used? How can the use of secondary materials be increased? These were the questions addressed by the Rezy-Spezi project, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) from 2021 to 2023. As part of the project, the Kunststoff-Zentrum SKZ in Würzburg and plastship GmbH in Waldems identified various barriers to the use of secondary materials and developed recommendations, taking into account limiting factors.
Strict optical requirements
A fundamental issue often lies in quality standards and norms, which are set very high for various reasons, although they are often not necessary for the primary product functionality. During the research project, the partners identified various potential applications that could enable increased use of secondary materials without compromising product performance. "One example that emerged as a significant factor in the project is strict optical requirements. For instance, color shades are precisely defined in some cases – even in areas that are not visible," said Antonia Ivanda, Scientist for Sustainable and Circular Products at SKZ. By expanding the allowable color spectra, it is conceivable to increase the availability of recycled plastics by up to 75% in certain industrial sectors.
Study results available online
The results of the three-year study were derived from research activities such as reviewing various standards, conducting surveys, and expert interviews. Several plastic experts from research and testing departments at SKZ, the plastics processing industry, recycling companies, and end consumers were consulted. The work identified various potential applications and areas for action. The study results are transparently accessible online through a digital tool.
SKZ involved in many projects on plastics Circularity
"We are currently involved in numerous projects aimed at improving the circularity of plastic products and advising companies on transitioning to a circular economy. The Rezy-Spezi project laid important groundwork for recognizing and leveraging the many opportunities," said Hermann Achenbach, Head of Sustainability and Circular Economy at SKZ.
