In today’s society and industry, the sustainability of products is becoming increasingly important, and the use of high-quality plastic recyclates in new products is essential wherever possible. However, interfering odors often lead to complaints from processors. HPF The Mineral Engineers has developed novel additives to address this issue.
Contaminated post-consumer or post-industrial plastic waste presents a significant challenge for the circular economy, as the quality level required by industry is often not met. The odor profile of the recyclates, in particular, frequently causes dissatisfaction. The unpleasant odors that can arise from impurities or during the recycling process are problematic, especially when considering their use in automotive interiors.
HPF proves its fine nose once again
The Quarzwerke division HPF The Mineral Engineers offers specialized additives for odor optimization. The mineral-based odor absorbers of the RESCOFIL® product range were blended into a post-consumer polypropylene recyclate at a level of 5% by weight using a twin-screw extruder. The resulting product was subjected to olfactometric testing according to the VDA 270 standard. The results demonstrate that the addition of the newly developed RESCOFIL® fillers significantly reduces the odor intensity of the recyclate to below the threshold value of 3, making the odor no longer a nuisance.
